countries: Slovakia The Slovak Republic emerged together with the Czech Republic as one of the two successor states of Czechoslovakia.
Very soon after the "Velvet Revolution" of 1989 and the first free elections in the Slovak part of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic (CSFR) supremacy was gained by those forces in Slovakia who advocated a fundamentally new status for Slovakia within the CSFR. By the summer of 1992 the movement for separation from the Czech Republic gained sufficient impetus for it to prove irreversible despite the undisputed wish of the majority of the population in both parts of the country to preserve the joint state. The heads of government of both constituent republics subsequently agreed that the political difficulties encountered by the CSFR could only be resolved by the dissolution of the federation. The Slovak Republic was subsequently founded on 1 January 1993. Overall, the division of the country proceeded in an orderly and peaceful manner
